Caring for a new implant in the first month

Days 1 to 3

Expect mild swelling and soreness. Use the cold compress for twenty minutes at a time, take the prescribed medication on schedule rather than waiting for pain, and keep your head slightly elevated when you sleep.

Do not rinse vigorously on the first day. The clot forming at the site is doing important work.

Days 4 to 10

Begin gentle warm saline rinses after meals. Brush the rest of your mouth normally and clean around the site carefully with a soft brush. A clean mouth heals faster than a protected one.

Eat on the other side. Soft, cool, nutritious food — not liquid-only. Your body is rebuilding bone and needs protein.

Weeks 2 to 4

Sutures come out or dissolve. Discomfort should be gone entirely by now; if it is increasing rather than decreasing, call us.

Things that genuinely matter

  • Smoking. It is the single biggest cause of early implant failure. Even a two-week pause materially improves your odds.
  • Diabetes control. Uncontrolled blood sugar slows bone integration. Keep it in range through the healing period.
  • Not testing it. Do not push or wiggle the site to check whether it is firm. It is healing; leave it alone.

Call us if

Pain increases after day four, swelling worsens after day three, you develop a fever, or you taste something persistently unpleasant. None of these are emergencies at 3am, but none should be ignored either.
